Dominic Thiem downplays US Open hopes after illness as Rafael Nadal showdown looms

Dominic Thiem is the fourth seed for the final Grand Slam of the year but will begin his campaign slightly undercooked.

Following his first-round exit at Wimbledon last month, the Austrian did win his home event in Kitzbuhel but he was beaten in the quarter-finals of the Hamburg Open and Rogers Cup.

Thiem’s exit in Rogers Cup was partly influenced by a virus and ultimately led to him withdrawing from last week’s Cincinnati Masters.

The French Open runner-up has managed to recover from his sickness and practised with Roger Federer on Thursday before the US Open draw was made.

Thiem will play Italian Thomas Fabbiano in the first round and if he reaches the semi-finals could meet Rafael Nadal.

But Thiem says looking too far ahead would be “presumptuous” after his health problems.

“Without a doubt, there are much tougher rivals than Thomas Fabbiano in a first-round,” Thiem said.

“Although I must say that, after overcoming this viral disease, I do not expect miracles.

“Right now I do not consider reaching a quarterfinals or a semifinal. I want to go round to round, looking beyond would be presumptuous.

“In the next few days I will keep my training to a minimum, the goal is to be in perfect shape on Monday.”

Meanwhile, 1988 US Open winner Mats Wilander feels Felix Auger Aliassime and Stefanos Tsitsipas possess the talent to both win at least 15-time Grand Slams in their career.

Both players have enjoyed breakthrough years but are yet to win a Major yet in their young careers.

But Wilander has no doubts about their qualities, telling Eurosport: “I think Felix Auger Aliassime’s most probably the one who has the best chance of doing something that’s extraordinary.

“Somebody like Stefanos Tsitsipas has the chance to be a multiple Grand Slam winner but of the ones that we know of now, winning 15 Slams, I would say that it’s one of the two of them of the ones that are playing now.

“There might be 16, 17-year-olds out there but I think they both have great attitude and can both play on all the different surfaces.”
