Dogs with ticks coming out of their ears left to starve in Tenerife cave

These upsetting images show five emaciated and tick-infested dogs forced to live in a cave on the tourist island of Tenerife.

A spokesman for a local animal shelter say the animals were living in ‘hell’, trapped in the hot sun without any food or water.

It is thought the dogs were owned by a local hunter who kept them in a ravine cave on the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands.

Police found them in the municipality of San Cristobal de La Laguna and took them to the Albergue Comarcal Valle Colino animal shelter, where they are being cared for by vets.

After three months in recovery, the dogs should be ready for adoption (Picture: CEN/@alberguevallecolino)

The dogs, three of whom are microchipped, are expected to be back to full health in around three months before going up for adoption.

It is not known whether the hunter has been arrested for animal abuse.

People on social media expressed how horrified they were by how the dogs had been treated.

Arantxa Flores Martin said: ‘Oh my God. At least there was a happy ending.

‘I don’t know how people can sleep when they keep animals in such conditions. He deserves to go to prison.’

Maria Jose Cerezo Herrero added: ‘Thanks to the kind and compassionate people who helped to rescue these five innocent animals from their living hell.’

The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Dogs Trust have recently warned re-homing dogs from overseas risks importing canine diseases.

But British owners who have taken-on dogs from Romania have told Metro.co.uk it was the ‘best decision they’ve ever made’ and shared advice for any would-be adopters.
