Derrius Guice proves health and confidence in his first preseason action


One of the top priorities for the Redskins against the Falcons was to give running back Derrius Guice his first action of the preseason and test out not only his health but his confidence. The 2018 second-round pick missed his entire rookie year through injury after tearing his ACL in the opening preseason game last year. Having been held out of the first two games as a precaution, the Redskins knew they needed to get Guice some work in Atlanta. They didn’t waste any time getting the ball in his hands either, calling for an outside zone to the left on their first offensive play.

Guice opened up with a strong run on his first carry. His initial aiming point is the outside leg of left tackle Donald Penn or the inside hip of an imaginary tight end outside of Penn. But off the snap, the Falcons’ edge defender does a good job quickly squeezing Penn and setting a hard edge, preventing Guice from taking his original path.
