Delta Downs Boosts Purse For Premier Quarter Horse Race To $1 Million

Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel today announced that its richest Quarter Horse race of the year, the Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1), will be worth an estimated $1 million beginning in 2020. The Lee Berwick is striving to become the second seven-figure Quarter Horse race in the state of Louisiana, joining the Louisiana Million, which is contested at Delta Downs’ sister racetrack Evangeline Downs.

Next year’s Lee Berwick Futurity purse will include $250,000-added from Delta Downs and $100,000 from the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association video poker funds, which will make the race a $350,000-added event. Purses for each trial of the Lee Berwick are expected to remain at $12,000 each.

“The Lee Berwick has always been out marquee event each Quarter Horse season at Delta Downs,” said Delta Downs Director of Racing, Chris Warren. “With the new purse increase and the opportunity to reach one million dollars it makes the race even more exciting for 2020.”

Traditionally the Lee Berwick Futurity has anchored Louisiana Showcase Night at Delta Downs. The richest program of the year features eight stakes races for Louisiana-bred horses on closing night of the track’s 46-day season. In 2020, Louisiana Showcase Night and closing night will coincide with Independence Day, Saturday, July 4.
