The Department of Defense apologized Saturday for an official tweet that appeared to joke about bombing “millennials” who attempted to storm the Area 51 base in Nevada.
A tweet posted Friday by the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) responded to a “Storm Area 51” event at the military base, where conspiracy theorists have long believed that the U.S. government is hiding secrets about extraterrestrial life.
“The last thing #Millennials will see if they attempt the #area51raid today,” the military unit’s tweet read, including a photo of U.S. soldiers standing in front of a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber.
The tweet was later deleted after receiving significant backlash.
“Last night a DVIDSHUB employee posted a Tweet that in NO WAY supports the stance of the Department of Defense,” the account tweeted. “It was inappropriate and we apologize for this mistake.”
About 150 people showed up at the Area 51 event over the weekend, resulting in a handful of arrests, Reuters reported.
