Dave Chappelle blasts 'woke' culture: You can't 'nag people into behaving'

Comedian Dave Chappelle blasted “woke” culture while discussing the backlash surrounding Elon Musk‘s “Saturday Night Live” performance over the weekend.

During an appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast Friday, Mr. Chappelle brought up the subject of Mr. Musk, whose “SNL” gig had outraged fans and even some of the show’s castmates.

“What do you think about this [expletive] Elon‘s going through with ‘Saturday Night Live?’” Mr. Chappelle asked Mr. Rogan.

“Ridiculous,” Mr. Rogan responded.

“Yeah, it’s puzzling,” Mr. Chappelle said.

“No one is woke enough,” Mr. Rogan continued. “They can’t appreciate the fact that you’re dealing with one of the most brilliant men that’s ever lived who is going to come do your show.”

“But can he write a monologue?” Mr. Chappelle asked.

“No, he’s not funny,” Mr. Rogan said. “He’s a brilliant guy.”

“Like you said, no one can be woke enough,” Mr. Chappelle said later in the show. “I’m torn, because I like a warrior for a good cause, but I’m really into tactics. You’re not gonna nag people into behaving. In fact, if you continue with this tone, even if you’re right, you’ll be very hard to hear.”

Mr. Musk, a centibillionaire and free-market proponent, faced left-wing criticism last year after speaking out against the COVID-19 lockdowns. When his “SNL” hosting gig was announced last month, several castmates grumbled on social media.

Mr. Chappelle said he met the Tesla CEO several years ago and described him as “very, incredibly kind.”

“I teased him about being the richest man on earth, and he took it with good humor,” the comedian recalled. “What’s funny is I had hung out with him years ago, after I quit ‘Chappelle‘s Show.’ … We hung out on a tour bus, and he says to me that night when we was all together here in Austin. He goes, ‘I met you before.’ I’m like, ‘Well, I have no recollection.’ And he looked kinda hurt.”
