Daryl Morey’s hiring not only gives the Sixers experience, it gives them hope


The last time the Philadelphia 76ers hired a lead basketball decision-maker with no direct ties to the organization was May 10, 2013. They raided the Houston Rockets to hire Sam Hinkie that day, and from that moment on, everything about the franchise changed. So it only makes sense that the person who has been tabbed to resuscitate The Process after it veered off course is none other than Hinkie’s former boss.

On Wednesday, a source confirmed the 76ers are in advanced talks to make Daryl Morey their president of basketball operations. The deal is expected to be finalized as early as this weekend, with Elton Brand staying on as the general manager. ESPN first reported the news.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Morey’s deal will be for five years, the same length of time Doc Rivers signed for a few weeks ago. Charania reported that within hours of Morey leaving the Rockets, Sixers ownership began to pursue him.
