Daryl Morey’s departure from the Rockets marks an endpoint for analytics revolution


Revolutions all have one thing in common: Eventually, they end.

Sports revolutions are no different. But unlike political ones, revolutions in other realms have no clear demarcation dates, no declarations of independence or treaties to serve as endpoints. English textile mills didn’t send out press releases in 1837 to inform everyone that the First Industrial Revolution was now complete.

Instead, these revolutions end because the victors steadily, gradually won. As it happens, everybody gets used to it and moves on with their lives.

So it is with the analytics revolution in basketball. It’s over and the nerds won, and now we’re on to whatever comes next.
