Daniil Medvedev tells umpire 'I can die' amid suffocating heat at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

He also lashed out at how little time players were given in changeovers, which is less at the Olympics than on the ATP Tour.

Medvedev said: “The fact that we have only one minute between changeovers is a joke.

“I think if you ask, let’s say 200 tennis players that are here, I think 195 will tell you that one minute is a joke and it should be 1:30 like it is in ATP tournaments.”

Several players have already hit out at the extreme conditions in Tokyo 2020, with Spain’s Paula Badosa forced to retire in her quarter final match against Marketa Vondrousova as she struggled with the heat.

The recent Roland Garros quarterfinalist was then taken off court in a wheelchair, covering her head with a towel to protect herself from the sun.
