Daniil Medvedev fires Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal warning as Roger Federer out of Paris

Daniil Medvedev has his sights firmly set on the world No 1 ranking.

The Russian is hoping to reach a seventh straight final at the Paris Masters this week.

A stunning run over the summer has seen Medvedev rise to fourth in the standings and he is on course to finish the year above Roger Federer, who dropped out of the final Masters event of the season this morning.

However, Medvedev is not happy with just surpassing the 20-time Grand Slam winner.

The 23-year-old has much loftier ambitions involving Djokovic and Nadal.

“It’s hard to explain because when I was No 15, I was good already,” Medvedev said in his pre-tournament press conference.

“Then I wanted to get into the top 10, which is never easy.

“And then with the US series when I lost during the third round, I managed to get in the top 10.

“And you can tell yourself, Okay, I’ve done a full circle, but I didn’t want to stop.

“I just want to see how far I can go. It could be No 1. If it doesn’t happen, that means that I wouldn’t be strong enough.

“And I know that here, now, to get to be high up in the race, you have to do a significant effort, but I’m trying to do my best.”

After the Paris Masters Medvedev will compete at the ATP Finals for the first time.

And that is a tournament he is desperate to be successful at.

“London, to be honest. It would be a dream,” he said when asked the one tournament he wants to win.

“You see, Masters 8, it’s a great competition for everyone.

“So if you were to ask me one tournament, I would say the ATP finals in London.”
