Damian Lillard and the text messages that changed his, and Blazers’, season


Many factors have gone into the transformation of the Trail Blazers going from fading to phenomenal in the past two weeks. But if you want this resurgence boiled down to the simplest of explanations, the answer is in the phone of Damian Lillard.

During April, which was the lowest point of Lillard’s season and one of the worst months of his career, Lillard was receiving text messages with the same three letters, presented to him in all caps:

NGE.

Not Good Enough.

The texts were from Phil Beckner, whom Lillard has known since his college days at Weber State when Beckner was an assistant coach. Today, Beckner trains a host of NBA players, but his closest and longest client is Lillard.

The NGE would accompany Beckner’s breakdown of the most recent game film of the Blazers’ schedule.
