Parasite resistance to deworming products is an ongoing concern for equine owners and caretakers. Though using fecal egg counts instead of deworming on a set schedule has been recommended for years, many farm and barn owners still opt to take the easy route and blanket deworm horses without having manure tested for parasite eggs.
Also still utilized are daily, feed-through dewormers that are topdressed on feed. Though horse owners may feel they are keeping their horses healthy by using these products, Dr. Martin Nielsen, a parasitologist, says that these daily deworming products are not the answer to keeping horses worm-free.
Nielsen says these products don’t work as well as they once did. He also notes that horses are supposed to have some parasites in their systems and that it is impossible to prevent their acquisition of all parasites.
