Cycles Now Outnumber Cars In City Of London

“Cycles made up a greater proportion of traffic than cars and private hire vehicles counted on our streets in 2022,” says a graph on a traffic survey conducted for the City of London Corporation, the municipal governing body of London’s square mile.

The traffic survey was conducted in November last year and is included in City Streets 2023, a document provided to members of the City of London Corporation’s streets and walkways sub-committee ahead of a meeting on July 18.

The traffic survey has been conducted every two years since 1999. Data is collected on private cars and private hire vehicles, taxis, motorcycles, goods vehicles, buses and coaches, pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders.

Over a 24-hour count period, the traffic survey counted 299,454 motor vehicles, a 20% decrease from 2019 pre- pandemic levels.

88,827 people on cycles were counted, a 2% increase from 2019. 670,146 people walking were counted, a 35% decrease.

Cycle traffic is the only transport mode higher than pre-pandemic volumes.

The number of motor vehicles using the Square Mile’s streets has halved since 1999, while the number of people cycling has grown by 292%.
