Crystal Palace are hoping they can complete a player-plus-cash deal for Brentford forward Ollie Watkins by offering Alexander Sorloth in exchange.

The striker has endured a nightmare spell at Selhurst Park, but Brentford’s owners are familiar with him from his spell with Danish club FC Midtjylland, which they also own.

Watkins managed 12 goals and nine assists for the Bees last season, and may act as a long-term replacement for Wilfried Zaha, whose future remains unclear.

In contrast, Sorloth scored once in 20 games for the south Londoners after joining in January 2018, and spent the end of last season on loan at Belgian side Genk.

He did, however, find the net 14 times in 25 games for Midtjylland and still retains the faith of the decision-makers who now oversee business at Brentford.

The Eagles also remain interested in Everton midfielder James McCarthy and are monitoring his situation.
