The big picture
Jon Machota, Cowboys beat writer: With or without Dalton, the Cowboys probably weren’t going to have much of a chance against the undefeated Steelers on Sunday. The Cowboys are arguably the NFL’s worst team right now. They might not be favored in another game this season. Dalton makes them better, but not to a level that’s going to win many more games with this current roster.
The front office won’t admit to tanking, but this year is forcing their hand. Anything that can go wrong basically has gone wrong. The second half of the season needs to be about playing younger players and seeing what they have for the future as they look to reshape this roster in the offseason.
Machota: No NFL team has great options at their No. 3 quarterback spot. That’s where the Cowboys are now that Dak Prescott is out for the season and Dalton is unable to play this week.
DiNucci didn’t play well in his first start Sunday night. That shouldn’t come as a surprise considering he had not played in any preseason games and was working as the scout-team quarterback a couple weeks before. The Cowboys also have Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush on the roster. Gilbert has only attempted six passes in his NFL career. Rush has attempted three. Rush was added to Dallas’ practice squad last week, but he has a chance to play Sunday considering he’s familiar with the offense from being Prescott’s backup the previous three seasons.
