While several states have issued orders to halt elective surgical procedures on humans amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Walz has clarified a similar order in his state refers to elective veterinary surgeries too.

According to a report from KMSP Fox 9, the governor’s office received questions about whether veterinarians had to halt non-essential surgeries, leading him to clarify his order on Monday.

“Veterinary procedures use equipment, particularly personal protective equipment, which is vital to stop the spread of COVID-19,” read an order from Walz.

In states with partial shutdown orders, veterinarians have been considered essential businesses and allowed to continue life-saving surgeries and other medically necessary procedures.
