Coronapiste Among 170 New Words To Enter 2022 Edition Of Petit Larousse French Dictionary

The French word for “corona cycleway”—Coronapiste—is one of the neologisms that will be included in the 2022 edition of Le Petit Larousse dictionary.

A contraction of “coronavirus” and “cycleway” the word will appear in the new edition of the French-language encyclopedic dictionary when it is released on May 19, reports LCI.

COVID-19 will also be in the new edition as will the English-language construct “click and collect.” The word for nasal swab—nasopharynge—also makes it into the dictionary, first published in 1905.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo sanctioned the creation of 650 kilometers of pop-up cycleways during the first lockdown in April last year. Such emergency infrastructure for essential workers was quickly billed as “coronapiste”—the French phrase for “cycleway” is “piste cyclable.”

More than 1,000 words were considered for inclusion in the new dictionary by the publishers of Le Petit Larousse, with many of them being pandemic-related. However, only 170 made the final cut.
