Connolly: Freddy Galvis signing might not excite, but it fits the 2021 Orioles


Shortly after news broke Tuesday that shortstop Marcus Semien was signing with the Toronto Blue Jays, that no one was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame for 2021 and that Hall candidate Curt Schilling no longer wants his name on the ballot, the Orioles offered their own announcement.

They signed free-agent shortstop Freddy Galvis and designated infielder/outfielder Chris Shaw for assignment.

Not exactly the kind of eyebrow-raiser that nudges aside major headlines nationally.

But given the Orioles’ roster-paring this offseason, and given a payroll that is two bloated contracts away from being declared officially bare-bones, signing Galvis is refreshingly relevant, if not significant.

Galvis, 31, agreed to a one-year deal with the Orioles worth $1.5 million with a $250,000 bonus if he gets traded during 2021, according to an industry source. That’s a significant dropoff from the $5.5 million the Cincinnati Reds were slated to pay him…
