Coco Gauff beats Venus Williams to reach Australian Open second round

Coco Gauff is through to the Australian Open second round after defeating seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams. The pair were on court for one hour and 37 minutes.

In a repeat of their epic Wimbledon first-round tie last summer, the oldest player in the tournament took on the youngest on Margaret Court Arena.

Gauff, 15, took an early lead in a thrilling contest but Williams was able to break back to 5-5 as the youngster was serving for the first set.

However, 39-year-old Williams made a crucial error in the tiebreak which cost her the set as she volleyed into the net while trailing 6-5.

Gauff then kicked on in the second set to earn the only break in a 6-3 win.

And after the match she thanked the supporters for getting behind her.

“You guys were chanting my name,” Gauff said. “I only thought that would happen at the US Open, so for that to happen in Australia — that was amazing.”

The teenager world No 66 takes on Sorana Cirstea in the second round on Wednesday.
