Cobra is utilizing a new manufacturing technique to create its latest better-player’s cavity-back irons, which the company said can deliver great feel with more consistency.
The King Tour irons are made using a metal-injection-molding process, as with the King MIM wedges. It involves super-heating 304 stainless steel powder to 1,340 degrees Celcius and then injecting it into molds. Cobra said that as the metal powder cools, the grains of steel pack more tightly together than they would during a typical forging process.
Cobra also said the powder takes the shape of the mold more thoroughly, so golfers should not only get an enhanced feel at impact, the clubs require less hand polishing and finishing work. That means each club is manufactured to a tighter tolerance.
To shift the ideal hitting area into the middle of the face, Cobra added a tungsten weight in each King Tour iron’s toe. The added weight also boosts the clubs’ perimeter weighting to make them less likely to twist on off-center hits.
Cobra designers also added a vibration-dampening thermoplastic polyurethane insert to each club’s back to enhance sound and feel.
