CNN announces climate town hall with 2020 Democrats

CNN announced Thursday it will hold a Democratic presidential town hall focused on climate change.

The event will take place on Sept. 4 in New York City. The network is inviting all the candidates who meet the threshold for the September primary debates of garnering 2 percent support in at least four different polls.

Several presidential contenders have put forward climate plans of their own that they say are best slated to reverse the effects of climate change.

Many of them seek to pose a contrast to President TrumpDonald John TrumpMcConnell, Paul offer bill to cement tax provision benefiting bourbon makers Creating opportunity for all Scarborough implores Democrats: Go hard after Trump or he’ll win in 2020 MORE who withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord and has praised the use of coal as a key energy source.

Many also urged the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to host an official primary debate focused solely on the environment, though the body has thus far declined to comply with the requests, saying it wants voters to hear from candidates on several different issues.

Climate change has become one of several focal points of the intraparty debate between progressives and centrists, with liberals advocating for a Green New Deal while moderates advocating for more incremental change.

CNN said the format for its climate town hall will be similar to other events it held earlier this year in which contenders appeared back-to-back throughout the evening.
