Clippers' Steve Ballmer tops Forbes' wealthiest sports team owners list


Have you ever wondered who the richest sports team owners in the world are? Forbes has you covered. The publication released its list of the top 20 richest owners in sports, with little in the way of surprises.

1. Steve Ballmer: Los Angeles Clippers

Steve Ballmer, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was the CEO of Microsoft from 2000-2014. His net worth is $52.7 billion, which is up 28 percent from last year. 

After retiring from Microsoft in 2014, Ballmer purchased the Clippers that same year for $2 billion after NBA commissioner Adam Silver forced Donald Sterling to sell the team.

Since the 2014-15 season, the Clippers have a 250-160 record and have made the playoffs in four out of five seasons. They were on pace to make the playoffs once again in 2020 before the NBA halted the season due to the coronavirus outbreak.

2. Mukesh Ambani: Mumbai Indians

Mukesh Ambani has made a majority of his money from petrochemicals, oil and gas. He is the chairman, managing director and largest shareholder of Reliance Industries Ltd., a Fortune Global 500 industry. 

He’s the richest person in Asia and and the 17th richest person in the world. His net worth is $36.8 billion, which is down 26 percent from last year. 

The Mumbai Indians are a cricket team. They play in the Indian Premier League and are four-time IPL champions. The Indians have made it to the playoffs every year since the team was founded in 2008. 

3. Francois Pinault and family: Stade Rennais FC

Francois Pinault and his family have made much of their money in luxury goods. He is the founder of Kering and the investment company Artemis. 

Stade Rennais has never really made a splash in France Ligue 1, finishing fifth or lower in 17 of 21 seasons.

4. Dietrich Mateschitz: New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Racing

Mateschitz is the co-founder and 49 percent owner of Red Bull energy drinks. His net worth is $16.5 billion, which is down 13 percent from last year. 

From 2010-2013, Red Bull Racing won the Formula One World Constructors’ Championship and Drivers’ Championship.

The New York Red Bulls have made the MLS Cup playoffs in 13 of 14 seasons since Mateschitz bought the team, but they’ve never won an MLS Cup.

5. Hasso Plattner and family: San Jose Sharks

Hasso Plattner is the co-founder of SAP SE, and his net worth is $12.4 billion, which is down 8 percent from last year. 

Plattner bought the Sharks in 2013, and since the 2013-14 season, San Jose has made it to the playoffs five of six seasons. The Sharks lost the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. 

6. David Tepper: Carolina Panthers

David Tepper is a hedge fund manager and philanthropist who is worth $12 billion, which is up 3 percent from 2019. 

Tepper purchased the Panthers in 2018 for $2.275 billion from team founder Jerry Richardson, who was fined by the NFL for sexual and racial workplace misconduct. 

The Panthers have yet to make the playoffs with Tepper as the owner, going 12-20 over the past two seasons. 

7. Roman Abramovich: Chelsea FC

Roman Abramovich is the owner of private investment company Millhouse LLC and has made a lot of his money in steel as well. He is worth $11.3 billion, which is down 9 percent from last year. 

He bought English Premier League side Chelsea FC in 2003, and they’ve won the FA Cup in 2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2017-18. 

They’ve also won the Football League Cup in 2004-05, 2006-07 and 2014-15. 

8. Philip Anschutz: Los Angeles Kings, L.A. Galaxy

Philip Anschutz has made his money from investments, and his worth is $11 billion, which is up 1 percent from last year. 

He bought the L.A. Galaxy in 1998 and the Kings in 1995. The Galaxy have won five MLS Cups since Anschutz bought the team, and the Kings have won two Stanley Cups. 

9. Stanley Kroenke: Los Angeles Rams, Arsenal, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids

Stanley Kroenke has made most of his money through sports and real estate. He’s worth $10 billion, which is up 15 percent from 2019. 

Kroenke bought the Rams in 1995, Arsenal in 2007, the Nuggets in 2000, the Avalanche in 2000 and the Rapids in 2000. 

The Rams have made it to two Super Bowls but lost to the New England Patriots both times. Arsenal has never won a league cup. The Nuggets have never made it to the NBA Finals, and the Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup once. The Rapids have also won the MLS Cup once. 

10. Joseph Tsai: Brooklyn Nets

Joseph Tsai made his money in E-commerce and is worth $10 billion, which is up 5 percent from last year. 

He purchased the Brooklyn Nets in 2019. They signed Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant last year after making the playoffs last season, but both have been injured and unable to play.

11. Jerry Jones: Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones is worth $8 billion, which is up 18 percent from last year. 

12. Shahid Khan: Jacksonville Jaguars

Shahid Khan is worth $7.8 billion, which is up 15 percent from 2019. 

13. Stephen Ross: Miami Dolphins

Stephen Ross is worth $7.6 billion and has seen no change in that category from last year. 

14. Robert Pera: Memphis Grizzlies

Robert Pera is worth $7 billion, which is up one percent from 2019.

15. Robert Kraft: New England Patriots

Robert Kraft is worth $6.9 billion, which is up 6 percent from last year.

16. Dmitry Rybolovlev: FC Monaco

Dmitry Rybolovlev is worth $6.6 billion, which down 3 percent from last year. 

17. Daniel Gilbert: Cleveland Cavaliers

Daniel Gilbert’s net worth is $6.5 billion, which is down 3 percent from 2019. 

18. Tom Gores: Detroit Pistons

Tom Gores’ net worth is $5.7 billion, which is up 43 percent from last year. 

19. Micky Arison: Miami Heat

Micky Arison is worth $5.1 billion, which is down a whopping 43 percent from last year.

20. Terrence Pegula: Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres

Terrence Pegula is worth $5 billion, which is up 11 percent from 2019.
