Clemson and Trevor Lawrence celebrate return, set the stage for what’s to come


CLEMSON, S.C. — Trevor Lawrence and Brandon Streeter, Clemson’s quarterbacks coach, embraced at midfield Saturday evening and snapped a photo together.

The scoreboard behind them read 52-17, an immediate reminder of No. 3 Clemson’s rout of Pittsburgh at Death Valley, in which Lawrence improved to 32-1, tying the school record for wins by a starting quarterback. A moment later, Lawrence found his family and fiancee for more pictures in the end zone. He paused for a selfie with a police officer on his way out of the stadium for good measure, making sure to, as he said afterward, “smell the roses.”

If Saturday was indeed the quarterback’s final home performance, it ranks as one worth remembering. Playing for the first time since Oct. 24 and since a COVID-19 positive test, Lawrence may have revived his Heisman Trophy chances — by the estimation of the Tigers’ official football Twitter account, for one.
