Clarence Seedorf: Players should be banned from covering their mouths to fight racism

What did Seedorf say?

“There is a lot of talk but not enough being done,” Seedorf said. “The need is obvious and very urgent.

“From a players’ perspective, I have seen stuff with players speaking and covering their mouth during matches. There were some racist situations in the last weeks or months where the players among themselves had hate speeches.

“Those things can be very easily attacked by implementing some rules. For me, it should be abandoned to be able to speak like that when you approach an adversary. When we’re talking about sport it has to be completely transparent, so why would I cover my mouth if I need to talk with my adversary?

“If I want to talk to my coach or a team-mate, all fine, but when I approach the referee or another player in any sport, you are not allowed to cover your mouth, it has to be a sanction, a yellow card.”

What was the outcome of the incidents?

Last week Slavia’s Kudela was provisionally suspended for one match by UEFA while Kamara’s accusation of racism is investigated.

Kudela denies the allegation and received the suspension for insulting an opponent, rather than for racist language. If he is found guilty of racism, the 34-year-old could face a 10-match ban.

Kamara also faces a potential five-match ban from UEFA as he is being investigated for “serious assault”.

Cala, meanwhile, will not be charged by La Liga following the incident with Diakhaby. La Liga says there was no proof of Cala using the alleged racist term after an examination of the available footage.

Where was Seedorf speaking?

Seedorf was speaking at the Council of Europe, a political organisation that champions human rights.

On Wednesday, the Council held a convention examining racism, homophobia, sexism and other hate speech within sport. The former AC Milan midfielder was joined by French sports minister Roxana Maracineanu and Michel Uva, UEFA’s Director of Football and Social Responsibility.
