Claiborne Farm’s Trappe Shot Headed To Turkey

Claiborne Farm announced Aug. 28 that Trappe Shot (Tapit – Shopping), a Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-performer who entered stud in 2012, will be relocated to Atman Stud in Turkey.

The 12-year-old son of Tapit, out of the Private Account mare Shopping, is the sire of graded stakes winners Hotshot Anna, Untrapped, Fish Trappe Road, Wild Shot, and Explode. Hotshot Anna is a Grade 2 winner and set a new track record over seven furlongs at Arlington International Racecourse last summer.

Bred in Florida by Hobeau Farm, Trappe Shot was purchased for a record $850,000 by agent Steve Young at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The Tapit colt made his first start at age three, and broke his maiden by 10 ¼-lengths at Gulfstream Park second time out; that kicked off a four-race win-streak, including the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park, before he finished second in the Grade 1 Haskell to Lookin at Lucky.

Trappe Shot made his four-year-old debut a winning one in the Waldoboro Stakes, and followed that up with an 8 ½-length victory in the Grade 2 Truth North Handicap at Belmont, where he earned a Beyer speed figure of 111. After that, he finished second by a nose in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga, where he earned a 112 Beyer, and was retired to Claiborne Farm following back-to-back 4th-place finishes in the Grade 1 Vosburgh and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin for owner Mill House LLC, Trappe Shot ended his racing career with six wins in twelve starts, and earned $703,884. He is currently ranked number three of his crop by lifetime Graded Stakes Horses, behind Uncle Mo and Twirling Candy.
