"Cinderella" Remake Will Be a "Me Too" Era Movie, Says Billy Porter

Pioneering actor Billy Porter recently shared some valuable intel on what we can expect from the upcoming live-action Cinderella, and it’s gonna be on my mind all day. From the sound of Billy’s comments, this new Cinderella adaptation — which stars Camila Cabello as Cinderella and Idina Menzel as her stepmother — sounds like it will be fun and timely in an enticing way.

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard anything substantial about this new take on Cinderella, so getting some insights from Billy is especially intriguing. Speaking with E! News, Billy shared what the script — co-written by Blockers director Kay Cannon (she’s directing this movie, too) and James Corden — brings to the table that would separate it from previous adaptations.

“The only thing I can know is that I am calling it a Cinderella for the #MeToo era,” Billy, who will play Cinderella’s fairy godmother, told E!. “That’s all I really know.”

Certainly an intriguing tease here, don’t you think? But how does #MeToo coalesce with the Cinderella story exactly? Should we expect the film to subvert expectations by having Camila’s Cinderella reject Prince Robert (played by Chambers star Nicholas Galitzine)? Will the prince just be a total f*ckboy and the two don’t have a romance at all because of it? Or have Corden and Cannon cooked up something entirely different here?

This is just the first in what will likely be a new wave of updates about Cinderella; filming is due to start in early 2020, so stay tuned.
