Churchill’s Ziegler Asks Louisiana Commission To Consider Medication Reforms

Nine racehorses have died at the Fair Grounds since the meet began on Thanksgiving Day, prompting Mike Ziegler, executive director of racing for Churchill Downs Inc., to appear before the Louisiana Racing Commission on Monday. According to nola.com, Ziegler urged the commission to consider several medication reforms, including the banning of race-day Lasix for 2-year-old races beginning in 2020.

“Our entire industry is knee deep in the midst of an existential crisis. We are being attacked, and arguably deservedly, on many fronts, and we simply cannot sit back, do nothing and expect this to go away,” Ziegler said at the meeting. “It will kill us. The court of public opinion has convicted us and we must make significant changes to change their minds. They’re keeping score now.”

The Fair Grounds is owned by Churchill Downs, Inc., but is subject to the purview of the Louisiana Racing Commission.

Charles Gardiner III, the executive director, said that the Commission would take a “hard look” at the reforms.
