Jockeys in the Kentucky Derby will be required to arrive in state by Aug. 31
Churchill Downs distributed Friday a document of COVID-19 protocols for jockeys planning to ride Kentucky Derby week, according to the Thoroughbred Daily News. The track had floated a date of Aug. 24 for those jockeys to arrive in Kentucky, but the final call is that any jockey riding at Churchill from Sept. 1 through 5 arrive in the state by Aug. 31.
Jockeys must declare their intentions to ride at Churchill that week via email by Aug. 18, and out-of-state riders must take a “CDC gold standard RT-PCR COVID-19 nasopharyngeal test” on Aug. 24.
Jockeys will take another test at Churchill on Aug. 31, and a third on the morning of Sept. 3.
Out-of-state jockeys will be sequestered in auxiliary quarters, and only Kentucky-based riders will be allowed in the main jockey’s quarters. Additionally, all jockey’s room personnel will be required to undergo the same testing.
