Christian Eriksen: Denmark midfielder discharged from hospital after cardiac arrest

What has been said?

A statement from the Danish FA said: “Christian Eriksen has been through a successful operation and was today discharged from Rigshospitalet.

“Today he also visited the national team in Helsingor – and from there he will go home and spend time with his family.”

Eriksen also released a statement, which read: “Thank you for the massive number of greetings — it has been incredible to see and feel. The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances.

“It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night.

“No need to say that I will be cheering on them on Monday against Russia.”

What happened to Eriksen?

Eriksen went down in the 43rd minute of the Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland. It quickly became clear the situation was serious and the game was suspended for over 90 minutes while the 29-year-old was assessed and treated.

After being treated by medics on the pitch, Eriksen was then transferred to a Copenhagen hospital where he was “stabilised”. The match was then cleared to resume.

Having been goalless before the stoppage, the game finished 1-0 to Finland with Joel Pohjanpalo heading home to give the Fins their first win at a major tournament on their debut.

How was Eriksen treated?

Eriksen had a device fitted to help treat abnormal heart rhythms — otherwise known as a heart starter.

Thin wires connect the device, placed under the skin just below the collar bone, to the heart and monitor your heart rate through electrodes.

The device is similar to a pacemaker but used to restart the heart if it goes into a rhythm that cannot ensure contraction of the ventricle.
