CHRIS SUTTON: Harry Maguire will eventually come through this because there's a good player in there

It has been a horrible start to the season for Harry Maguire and I really feel for him. His confidence must be shot.

He’s a really talented player but he has been woeful and he is going to have to show real strength of character to come back from this.

There will be a lot of fans around the country revelling in the fact he’s having an absolute shocker. I’ve been there when my confidence was down. I was on my knees and it’s horrible to see another player going through that. Eventually he’ll come through it because there’s a good player in there.

Gareth Southgate is putting his trust in him, saying: ‘I back you, I know you’re having a tough time, I still rate you highly and have confidence in you.’ I don’t mind that principle, if Gareth thinks he’s his best centre back.

Maguire’s red card, however, was deserved. He put himself under pressure with an early challenge on Yussuf Poulsen that earned him his first yellow card. 

For the second, he went to ground again and that was the issue — you always give the referee a decision to make.

He lunged with his left boot, got a touch on the ball and it was his follow-through that caught Kasper Dolberg.

It was unfortunate for Maguire, a bit unlucky — but I don’t think we can argue that it wasn’t a second yellow with the nature of the game these days.

He should have been a bit more streetwise and thought, ‘I’m on a yellow’. The ball was only around the halfway line and Denmark weren’t going to score from there.
