Chris Evert reveals Rafael Nadal’s gameplan and why ace will win US Open

American tennis legend Chris Evert is backing Rafael Nadal to win the US Open this year.

Nadal begins his campaign at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday night as he takes on John Millman.

The Spaniard last won the title in New York in 2017 and reached the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are also expected to be in contention for the trophy with the Serb having won four of the last five Grand Slams.

But Evert, who won 18 Grand Slam titles in her career, is backing Nadal to win his 19th with an aggressive style.

When asked by ESPN who will win the US Open, Evert said: “Nadal. He has looked strong in practice and continues to improve his game by working on being more aggressive.”

Nadal retired from his semi-final clash with Juan Martin del Porto last year due to a knee injury.

It came after some brutal matches in the earlier rounds with Nadal cancelling the rest of his season to ensure he was ready for this year.

And Greg Rusedski believes Nadal needs to have an easier first week if he is to be successful at the US Open.

“He can’t afford to go as long as he did with those matches,” Rusedski told Express Sport.

“You can lose a major in the first week if you even get through it by having too many brutal matches back-to-back.

“He just had too many brutal matches back-to-back. The conditions were too slow last year.

“And the guys he played you have to give credit too. Khachanov and Thiem. what he is doing is absolutely phenomenal.

“If he can have an easier run in the first week there’s no reason why he can’t go all the way because he has won the US Open on a few occasions.”
