China Restarts International Flights From Shanghai, Guangzhou As Reopening Advances

China-based airlines are restarting international flights from Shanghai and Guangzhou that were suspended during the Covid pandemic, a move that will cheer overseas travelers looking to visit but have faced high ticket prices and limited schedules.

Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines has resumed 52 air routes to overseas destinations, with 302 flights per week, the government-published Shanghai Daily reported today.

The routes include Shanghai-New York, Shanghai-London, Shanghai-Toronto, Shanghai-Paris, Shanghai-Sydney and Shanghai-Frankfurt, the Shanghai Daily said.

China Eastern also plans to add routes from Shanghai to Taipei, Dubai, Manila, and from Wuxi to Hong Kong and Macau by the end of February, the newspaper said.

Flights declined amid stringent “zero-Covid” lockdowns and quarantines in the mainland that slowed the economy and inconvenienced visitors. China ended quarantine for international arrivals last month.

U.S.-traded shares in Trip.com, the country’s largest online travel site, and hotel chains H World, Atour and GreenTree have climbed since late October in line with the easing of Covid restrictions.

According to the Shanghai Daily report, Guangzhou-headquartered China Southern Airlines has resumed and launched 48 round-trip routes in 12 countries. Shanghai-based Spring Airlines has resumed 24 foreign routes, the report said.

The move comes against the backdrop of the U.S. downing of a suspected China spy balloon this weekend. Discovery of the balloon has added to geopolitical and trade strains between the two countries.
