Cher Says She Loves RuPaul and Will “Have to Go On” Drag Race at Some Point

Between Cher: The Unauthorized Rusical and an uncanny impersonation by All Stars champ Chad Michaels, one might assume that Cher “already done had herses.”

Well, snap out of it!

The Goddess of Pop herself has never actually graced the main stage of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But that’s about to change, if Cher has anything to say about it. “I’m going to have to go on it at some point,” the star recently told Entertainment Weekly. Only dogs could hear fans’ reflexive squeals of delight.

“I’ve known him for a long time. He’s such a cool guy,” Cher went on, referring to RuPaul. “I would consider it! I have watched it… He’s smart and I love him.”

Cher and the Emmy-winning host have shared the stage before, on The RuPaul Show back in 1997, also on VH1. Ru told the studio audience that she had idolized Cher “as a little drag queen growing up in Georgia.” She especially loved hearing that Cher never really wore dresses until she met the Pope, when it seemed only appropriate.

“From that day on, I was like, ‘She rocks, she’s cool, I’m with her forever. And that’s how it’s been. I am Cher!” Ru exclaimed. “No, she’s Cher. But I live for Cher!”

Drag Race has featured an increasingly starry array of guest judges and cameos in recent seasons. Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson both virtually beamed into the workroom for pep talks with the latest crop of queens. Lizzo, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj are among the current chart-toppers to sit behind the judges’ table. Other legacy appearances have included Chaka Khan and The B52s. Even Cher’s signature designer Bob Mackie has been a judge.

In fact, the “Believe” singer seems to be the last remaining generation of her own family not to appear on the show. Her son Chaz Bono has made multiple appearances, one of them alongside his grandmother, Cher’s mom, Georgia Holt.

A mutual appreciation between Cher and RuPaul all but assures the guest appearance will eventually come to pass. “He’s the coolest guy ever,” Cher told EW. “What he’s been able to do is amazing.”
