Chelsea 'are interested in signing a THIRD Barcelona player amid their "serious" pursuit of Gavi'

Chelsea ‘are interested in signing a THIRD Barcelona player amid their “serious” pursuit of young midfielder Gavi… with club having already shown interest in Frenkie de Jong and Sergino Dest this month’

  • Chelsea have already been linked with a £33m move for Frenkie de Jong
  • Blues also considered Sergino Dest among their full-back options this month
  • But now they are reportedly chasing Barcelona starlet Gavi in a £42m deal
  • Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Man City are also interested in Spain midfielder

Chelsea are reportedly ‘very serious’ about their pursuit of young midfielder Gavi, taking the number of Barcelona players they are interested in to three.

The Blues have already been linked to midfielder Frenkie de Jong, with reports earlier this week claiming they have made an opening bid of £33million for the Holland international.

Sportsmail meanwhile reported earlier this month full-back Sergino Dest was among the options being considered this month by Thomas Tuchel following the news left-back Ben Chilwell will miss the rest of the season.

But now Catalan outlet El Nacional claim Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is keen on a third star from Barcelona in the form of 17-year-old Spain international Gavi.

The report claims Gavi would cost in the region of £42million (50m) owing to the low release clause in his current contract, and that the European champions will offer him a significant increase on his youth-team salary amounting to a reported £1,600 per week.

However, the same outlet claims there are currently two stumbling blocks, with the first being that talks to sign Gavi have not advanced as Chelsea may have hoped.

The second, they add, is that there is fierce competition for the midfielder’s signature, with Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City also vying to sign him.

And Xavi last month demanded Barcelona to tie down their academy starlet to a new deal after the 17-year-old’s impressive breakthrough campaign, something the latest report claims they are trying to do.

‘We must act now to renew him (Gavi)’, he told MARCA. ‘If necessary, we will find a way to put money together.

‘He and Ansu [Fati], Pedri, [Ronald] Araujo are important for us. He is one of the future players of the club and we are working on his renewal.’

Gavi has made 25 appearances across all competitions for Xavi’s men this season, playing most recently in their Spanish Super Cup semi-final defeat by Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia.
