Charles Town Suspends Racing After Governor’s ‘Stay At Home Order

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice

Due to ongoing health and safety concerns surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19, Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races will be indefinitely suspending its live racing programs until further notice.

The announcement comes on the heels of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice’s Monday press conference where he issued a statewide “stay at home” order that has the impact of shutting down non-essential businesses as of 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

The track will remain open in the mornings for horsemen on the grounds to continue with light training.

The “stay at home” order came just over a week after the West Virginia governor made national news by seemingly downplaying the threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While officials in other states were already shutting down bars and restaurants and urging people to practice social distancing and avoid gatherings, Justice said on March 16, before West Virginia had its first confirmed case of the virus:  “Go to the grocery stores. For crying out loud, go to the grocery stores. If you want to go to Bob Evans and eat, go to Bob Evans and eat.”

Twenty-four hours later after the state’s first COVID-19 case, he ordered all restaurants closed for dining in. By the end of business March 23, West Virginia had 20 confirmed cases.
