In a set of standout musical performances on Saturday Night Live, pop star Chappell Roan channelled the Bride of Frankenstein and debuted a brand-new lesbian country anthem.
After SNL kicked off with a surprise cameo from Vice President Kamala Harris and a few characteristically absurd sketches featuring host John Mulaney, Roan appeared in a Bride of Frankenstein-inspired white dress to perform her first hit: the 2020 single “Pink Pony Club.” The performance took added significance in light of the recent revelation from producer and co-writer Dan Nigro that executives at Roan’s erstwhile label Atlantic Records disliked the track before release.
Roan’s raucous, high-energy performance of “Pink Pony Club” on SNL proved that anyone who didn’t believe in her was dead wrong (it’s a Frankenstein joke, get it?). In fact, the real high point of the number came when she asked the audience to sing along and turned the microphone around, revealing just how enthusiastic everyone in Studio 8H was to be in the presence of the Midwest Princess. Seriously, just listen to how loud it got in there:
