Celtics, Blake Griffin agree to 1-year deal: Source

The Boston Celtics and forward Blake Griffin have agreed to a one-year deal that is fully guaranteed, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Friday. ESPN first reported the news.

The six-time All-Star was a free agent prior to signing with the Celtics. Griffin played in 56 games with the Brooklyn Nets last season, averaging 6.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. The 33-year-old has struggled with knee injuries throughout his career and averaged 17.1 minutes played per game last season.

After Danilo Gallinari tore his ACL and Rob Williams was pulled out for two to three months following a follow-up knee surgery, Boston had an immediate need for front court help. Al Horford and Grant Williams were the only two bigs with guaranteed contracts, while Luke Kornet has been the leading candidate to get some of the backup center minutes that have opened up.

However, Kornet will miss one to two weeks after suffering an ankle sprain in practice Thursday, sources told The Athletic.

Griffin signing a fully-guaranteed deal indicates he will move ahead of the various backups in the depth chart, behind just Horford and Grant Williams early on.
