Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin passes Marcel Dionne for fifth on NHL goals list

Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin moved past Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne into fifth place on the NHL’s all-time goals list with two goals against the New York Rangers in the Capitals’ season-opening 5-1 win Wednesday.

Ovechkin, 36, scored his second goal of the game and 732nd of his career to put the Capitals ahead 5-1 in the third period. He is nine goals shy of tying Brett Hull for fourth on the all-time list. Jaromir Jagr is third at 766.

Now in his 17th season, Ovechkin had scored at least 32 goals in every season until finishing with 24 in last year’s shortened campaign.
