California governor says at climate event that he is 'humiliated' by Trump

“I don’t know what the hell happened to this country that we have a president that we do today on this issue,” Newsom said at the opening ceremony for a Climate Week event in New York.

“Because it’s a damn shame. It really is. I’m not a little embarrassed about it — I’m absolutely humiliated by what’s going on.”

Newsom is in New York, where the the United Nations Climate Action Summit is taking place, highlighting how California is addressing climate change.

California is considered a global leader in the arena, having done significant work on emissions reduction, electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Trump, a climate change skeptic, has taken the U.S. out of the landmark Paris agreement, supported the fossil fuel industry and rolled back environmental regulations.

Newsom’s pointed criticism of Trump on climate comes after the administration revoked an exception under the Clean Air Act allowing California to set its own tailpipe emissions standards. That move is likely to elicit a long legal battle.
