Cade McNamara’s spark helps Michigan escape disaster against Rutgers


At some point Saturday night or Sunday morning, you could imagine players on Michigan’s sideline looking around, wondering where they were and how they got there. Is this heaven? Is it hell? Is it New Jersey?

It seemed the Wolverines had entered a state of purgatory that resembled a never-ending game against Rutgers, in which everyone is sentenced to pay for their mistakes and no one rests until they finally get it right. At 12:05 a.m., when Dax Hill stepped in front of Isaih Pacheco for the game-sealing interception in triple overtime, the Wolverines were released at last. Yes, it was Rutgers, and no, it wasn’t especially pleasant. But after starting the season 1-3 and dodging all sorts of disasters against the Scarlet Knights, Michigan wasn’t going to miss a chance to celebrate.

“That’s been gut-wrenching, not to see our guys having fun,” coach Jim Harbaugh said. “Tonight they did. They were able to get the victory.
