Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema is once again making bisexual history by resigning from Congress at long last.
The polarizing lawmaker posted a video message to her YouTube channel on Tuesday, alongside a press release on her website, announcing that she would not be seeking re-election at the end of her term.
“I believe in my approach,” she said in the video. “But, it’s not what America wants right now. I love Arizona and I am so proud of what we’ve delivered. Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year.”
To be clear, what Sinema means by “working together to get stuff done” is actively obstructing monumental legislation for the sake of radical bothsidesism. As the New York Times reports, “Ms. Sinema took pride in her relationships with centrist Republicans,” which is a source of pride that we will simply never understand.
Sinema was elected to the Senate as a Democrat in 2018, becoming the first openly bisexual lawmaker in Congress, and the second out LGBTQ+ Senator ever. The excitement over this #representationwin lasted approximately two seconds before people realized that Sinema was actually kind of terrible.
Let us count the ways: Sinema voted against a $15 federal minimum wage in 2021, and to add insult to injury, she did so with an infuriatingly twee thumbs down and curtsy. She refused to consider abandoning the filibuster despite the pleas of over 100 LGBTQ+ leaders in Arizona. Her continued inexplicable allegiance to the filibuster, which was created by mistake, has led to the continued obstruction of the Equality Act, which would provide landmark civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ people. Last but not least, there was the fact that she and her buddy West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin were responsible for slashing in half the budget for President Joe Biden’s social spending and climate package Build Back Better. It was all enough to make people wonder what exactly Sinema was doing as a member of the Democratic Party to begin with — fittingly, she registered as an Independent in December 2022.
