Brittney Griner and Her Wife Cherelle Are Having Their First Baby This Summer

Women’s basketball star Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle are having their first baby. In an Instagram post featuring ultrasound images over the weekend, the couple shared that they are “less than three months from meeting our favorite human being,” adding an expected due date sometime in July 2024.

That happy moment will arrive midway through the 2024 WNBA season, which will find the longtime hoops legend competing in her second season back with the Phoenix Mercury since being freed from her nine-month Russian detention in December 2022. Cherelle Griner, an attorney who married Brittney in 2019, was instrumental in advocating for her wife’s release, urging President Joe Biden and other politicians to bring Griner home.

The couple have been on a whirlwind journey since their emotional reunion, attending the Met Gala, appearing at the White House correspondents’ dinner, and announcing an array of creative projects including an ESPN documentary and a memoir. But it’s probably safe to say a child will be their greatest collaboration yet!

On Instagram, a veritable who’s who of basketball superstars turned out to show their support for the happy couple, including New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart, Las Vegas Aces player Alysha Clark, Los Angeles Sparks point guard Kia Nurse, and many more. (I would be remiss not to note that no less a lesbian legend than Kehlani herself also stopped by the comments section to offer her sincere congratulations to the Griners.)

One of the most adorable notes came from the Instagram account for Brittney Griner’s team, reading simply “Baby Griner 🥹.” On one hand, it’s a beautiful moment of recognition from the Phoenix Mercury, who drafted Brittney in 2013 as the first overall pick. But with women’s basketball growing more competitive than ever, might I jokingly suggest that the team could be getting a very long head start on the 2045 WNBA Draft?

We’ll have to wait three more months to meet the Griners’ favorite human, but for now, we offer our kudos to the couple.
