BRIAN LAUDRUP: Scotland's defeat came down to composure and they must respond against England

BRIAN LAUDRUP: Scotland’s defeat came down to decision-making and composure… they now need a MASSIVE performance against England at Wembley – but I think Steve Clarke’s squad have it in them

Chances came and chances went. In the end, though, this was a really disappointing start to Scotland’s campaign.

It is going to take something extraordinary when Steve Clarke’s men go to Wembley on Friday. They need a massive performance to even get a point against England that would generate real belief going into the final Group D game against Croatia.

I don’t think it’s impossible. I do think this squad has it in them. But I would expect a number of changes to a starting line-up that didn’t click against the Czech Republic, especially in the first half.

Che Adams will surely start up front at Wembley. He gives Scotland another dimension with his runs and his link-up play but needs 90 minutes to make a real difference. I was surprised to see Lyndon Dykes and Ryan Christie picked ahead of him.

I would imagine there could be a different face on the right-hand side, too. It was really difficult for Stephen O’Donnell against the Czechs and he looked a weak link in terms of trying to build attacks.

Steve Clarke might also study the balance of his central midfield to try to get more control of the ball. Finally, and crucially, there is a chance Kieran Tierney could be back.

There can be a debate over Clarke’s other picks yesterday, but being without Tierney was a such an unlucky blow. Scotland didn’t find a way to adapt to the absence of his bursting runs from centre-back.

The Czechs put people on Scott McTominay and John McGinn during the first half. They did extremely well in blocking all the passing channels and limiting the impact of two important players. There wasn’t that link from midfield to Dykes and Christie and it caused a huge problem.

Scotland needed someone to take the ball forward on their own and break through the lines. That’s what Tierney can do to such great effect. He is a disruptor.

Nothing much came from the right side at all, so it was down to Andy Robertson on the left flank. It became one dimensional in that sense — Robertson or nothing.

There was too much reliance on Andy Robertson and not enough of a threat down the right

The Liverpool man created a chance for Dykes and then had a shot himself that was a huge opportunity. Despite that, I thought Robertson did well.

What a strange game it was at times. Despite not being at their best at all, Scotland created chances they didn’t take. It came down to decision-making and a bit of composure.

That was maybe shown again when Jack Hendry opted to shoot from 25 yards instead of just keeping the attack going with a simple pass to the right.

But you have to say it was an absolutely world-class finish from Patrik Schick.

That fact Hampden might have already witnessed goal of the tournament will be of no consolation at all to the supporters who felt such deflation yesterday.
