Breonna Taylor Memorialized With Nursing Scholarship

Today would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday. Many mourned her death today, but her family and friends received news that a new scholarship was created in her honor at the University of Louisville.

Breonna Taylor was killed by police not long after midnight on March 13 in Louisville, Kentucky. The officers were serving a “no-knock” warrant that allows them to enter a home without warning or identifying themselves.

The new scholarship is called the Breonna Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will provide full tuition and fees at the University of Louisville for four years. There will be a preference for a Black female who is a resident of Kentucky when selecting the recipient.

Taylor was an emergency medical technician and had plans to become a nurse. University President Neeli Bendapudi said, “We hope this provides an opportunity for another phenomenal Black woman to follow in her footsteps.”

Taylor’s life was celebrated today in Louisville and in cities across the country while protests continued. A number of Senators and other influential politicians showed their support for Taylor and called for justice.

Former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted honoring her and raising money.

Protests have been happening all over the country over the last week after the deaths of Taylor, George Floyd, and Amaud Arbery. Reports on Twitter showed that protestors were celebrating her birthday and singing to honor her. Calls for justice will likely continue. A scholarship doesn’t bring that for her or her family, but it honors her memory and will help other Black women like her pursue their dreams.
