Bradley Whitford: 'Fakest thing' about 'The West Wing' was 'rational Republicans'

“The West Wing” star Bradley Whitford said Tuesday that the “fakest thing” about the 2000s hit drama series was the way it portrayed Republican characters as “rational.”

“The fakest thing about that show was that we had rational Republicans,” Mr. Whitford, who recently scored an Emmy for his role on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” told BuzzFeed in a new interview.

“That’s a creature that used to exist,” he said.

Mr. Whitford, who starred as Josh Lyman on NBC’s “The West Wing,” said he gets a lot of people wanting a reboot but he doesn’t think it would work in today’s political climate.

“Because somehow we’ve gotten to this place where if we don’t agree politically it’s not just that we don’t agree politically, it’s that the other person is insane,” Mr. Whitford said. “And I’m guilty of that kind of thinking. I think we all are, and I’m not sure how we get out of it.

“We are so cynical about politics, and that show is the opposite of cynicism,” he said. “It shows the difficulties that you go through, but showed people who really believe in the mission of government and understand that politics is the way you create your moral vision.

“it’s a very dark, weird time now. I don’t know how it would play,” he added.
