A heart-stopping video shows the moment a 12-year-old boy had an all too close encounter with a bear in the Brenta Dolomites.

A family in Italy is reported to have come across the brown bear during a hike in the Sporminore municipality in Trentino.

While many others may have lost their cool, the young boy, named Alessando, has been praised for remaining calm during the memorable incident.

Footage shows the young boy nervously walk down a hill as the animal follows only metres behind.

Wearing brightly coloured attire, Alessando checks behind him, as his mother and her boyfriend advise him not to panic.

Tension grows as the bear stands on its hind legs and the boy calls for his mum.

However, the animal eventually loses interest in the family and stops to investigate a bush.

Most bears do not, under normal circumstances, hunt and feed on humans.

However, some bear attacks have occurred when the animal is defending what it perceives to be a threat to its territory.

There are between 80 and 90 bears in Trentino, especially in the Brenta area.

The incident follows some other recent close encounters, according to La Voce del Trentino.

It comes after a cheeky bear who had been on a honey-stealing rampage for nine months was recaptured in Italy in May.
