Boris Becker throws weight behind ATP rule change after Federer and Nadal success

On-court coaching should be incorporated into the ATP rulebook, according to six-time Grand Slam winner Boris Becker.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal received many plaudits for their advise to one another at the Laver Cup last weekend.

The pair also stood court-side to help their team-mates pick up the points required as Team Europe won the title for a third straight year.

And Becker was so impressed with how entertaining the coaching was he wants it implemented full time.

“I had so much fun/excitement watching #LaverCup2019!” Becker tweeted.

“Congratulations to everybody who contributed to the success of the event! The game of tennis was the big winner.

“BTW I loved the coaching on court from John/Bjorn and all team members!!! Why not regularly thing on the tour @ATP_Tour #GrandSlam.”

Meanwhile, Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratroglou also backed on-court coaching.

He tweeted: “I am glad to witness this excitement about on-court coaching!

“It is amazing to get this energy, this level of information.

“This is all about performance, strategy, finding a way, this is all about life. When do we bring that on tour all year long ATP?”

And Federer explained during the Laver Cup how much he enjoyed the pep-talks from Nadal.

“I really enjoy his clarity in his advice. It reminded me of the match in Prague against Nick [Kyrgios],” he said.

“What I really enjoy with Rafa, our ideas often align. When it comes to rally points, he is excellent.

“He knows how much is enough and how much is too much. And he’s a great problem, solution finder.”
