Blue Cross appeals for home for pup who’s spent almost a full year at a shelter

While we’re all worried about what Covid-19 restrictions might mean for our family Christmases, Eric the dog is hoping that it won’t mean another festive season spent at a shelter.

Four-year-old Eric has his paws crossed for a home for Christmas, having spent almost a year in a rehoming centre with no family to call his own.

Eric came into pet charity Blue Cross in November 2019 as his previous owner could no longer care for him.

It’s now been more than 350 days since he has been in the care of the charity’s team at Lewknor in Oxfordshire, but staff think Eric keeps getting overlooked because he has a few special requests of his new home.

As he gets worried by other dogs, Eric needs a home where he can be street walked nearby where he is unlikely to encounter dogs who are off lead.

Despite Ricky Gervais and his wife Jane retweeting the Blue Cross appeal for a home for Eric last week, nobody has yet come forward as a suitable owner.

Ricky wrote: ‘Right. Someone give Eric a home. Look at him!’ and comments poured in from well-wishers. Sadly, it hasn’t yet resulted in a home for the lurcher.

Staff looking after Eric got him into his finery to show off just how sweet he really is – with his bow tie for good measure – waiting to go to his new home like the proper gent that he is.

Hannah Owen, Animal Welfare Assistant at Blue Cross Lewknor, said: ‘Eric is a fun loving and playful lad with bags of character.

‘He just has a few special requests of his new home but in return he’ll make someone a wonderful companion.’

The team are looking for a home where Eric will be the only pet, with an experienced owner who has trained dogs before.
