Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernard Sanders on Monday filmed a forthcoming campaign video with rapper Cardi B in an effort to woo young voters.
The Vermont independent met with Cardi B at the TEN Nail Bar, a Detroit nail salon, where they discussed canceling the student debt, climate change and raising the minimum wage, CNN reported.
“We [are] working on a way to involve more young people in the political process,” Mr. Sanders told CNN in an interview at the shoot. “The future of America depends on young people. They are voting in large numbers, but not large enough numbers.”
Cardi B posted a photo from their meeting on Instagram on Monday, thanking Mr. Sanders for sitting down with her and sharing his vision on how he plans to “change this country” if he becomes president.
“A couple of weeks ago I asked my followers if you had the opportunity to have a question answered by a democratic candidate what would it be,” the rapper wrote. “I got a lot of submission[s] and selected the most popular questions to get answered. Stay tuned to see how he will fight for economic, racial, and social justice for all. Together, let’s build a movement of young people to transform this country. LET’S LEARN OUR CANDIDATES!”
Mr. Sanders and Cardi B have publicly expressed admiration for one another on several occasions, including last week when Mr. Sanders said Cardi B, a former exotic dancer, was passionate about improving life for working people.
“She is really smart. And she is deeply concerned about what’s happening in this country,” the senator said during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
