Sex and the City cast members and fans are mourning the loss of Willie Garson, who played one of the era-defining show’s most beloved characters, Stanford Blatch. The actor has died at the age of 57.

Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda, said in a tribute post on Instagram that she was “so deeply, deeply sad at the news. “We all loved him and adored working with him. He was endlessly funny on-screen and in real life. He was a source of light, friendship, and show-business lore,” she wrote. Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell, said: “Stanford Blatch is so beloved to me and Willie brought him to life so beautifully. What a gift to us all.” Chris Noth, the show’s Mr Big, said simply: “Willie.”

Garson was due to return as Stanford in the upcoming SATC reboot, And Just Like That. A statement from the HBO show said: “He created one of the most beloved characters from the HBO pantheon and was a member of our family for nearly 25 years. We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing and extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
